what trees can you plant together?

Seeking some wisdom about planting orchards.

I've got a piece of property in northern Greece, and I would like to plant a variety of fruit and nut trees. I need to learn which trees will live well in close proximity, which will not, soil type requirements, etc. If I had to compare the soil to anything in the US, I would say it is kind of a drier version of Georgia (the US state).

Citrus, olives, nuts, figs and apples all grow well there. Walnuts and almonds grow there, but I'd like to experiment with pecans. I have no idea about care, pests, water and soil requirements, surrounding ecology, and all that.

Any experience or advice is appreciated.

In Southwest Ohio, where I am, apple & pear trees seem to do pretty well. Some folks grow peaches too. Cherries grow well.

i grew up around pecan trees in the south. though they will grow here they don't stand the colder temps in the midwest & produce. i think they like sandier soil- like south georgia, but somewhat flexible re clays.

black walnut trees have some special considerations re a toxin in the root areas & can't be near a lot of vegetables; i don't know about other trees. apples trees not near cedars.

lots of times nut & fruit trees are every other year for good production. pollination is important. almonds & peaches work together. sometimes u need more than one of the same tree[some plums & pears]. maybe male & female? nut trees are a very good source of protein.

here in the midwest all fruit trees are somewhat marginal w/o chemicals. i could' t depend on them. apples & pears are our best.

get local info if possible ; an oldtimer is the best. maybe some accounting for recent weather patterns.

+1

No substitute for local knowledge. I have an orchard with a variety of fruit and nut trees in northern Florida. Olives, Pecans, Peaches, Kumquats, Oranges, Nectarines, Blueberries, grapes, lemons. Some trees will produce more in one year than another, diversity is good. Some trees, like pears, and pecans, need two trees to cross-pollinate. Leave enough space between trees for full sun and growth, water and fertilize liberally the first year or so and you will soon be enjoying the fruits of your labor...yum, yum!

Hmmmmm, I'm not sure there's one of those in Northern Greece. I'm a bit jealous of him, btw.
